Insomnia
Insomnia is defined as difficulty falling asleep, waking frequently, or waking from sleep prematurely with subsequent inability to return to sleep.
A minimum amount of sleep is needed for many body functions; too little can lead to irritability, depression, digestive problems, emotional disturbances and poor memory.
The causes of Insomnia are varied, but most common is psychological. Trouble in falling asleep is associated with anxiety; difficulty in remaining asleep is linked to depression, illness, persistent pain or changes to the daily body-clock. Lack of exercise, stimulants such as caffeine and nicotine, alcohol or a change in sleep surroundings can affect sleep rhythms.
Tip: look at your lifestyle habits. Make sure you are eating sensibly, limiting your intake of alcohol and caffeine, taking regular exercise and doing a daily relaxation exercise to aid a restful nights sleep.
