Sciatica
Sciatica arises when there is pressure or irritation of the sciatic nerve, resulting in pain radiating through the buttock, and down the back of the thigh and leg. This is often caused by lower back strain, muscle spasm or a slipped disc pressing on the spinal root of the nerve. Rarely it is from pressure of a clot, or tumour.
Sciatica in young people can result from sports injuries or in late pregnancy, when there might be a ligament strain.
Sciatica is sometimes preceded or accompanied by lower back pain, pins and needles and numbness.
Tip: try to sleep on an orthopaedic mattress as a non-support mattress can aggravate the condition.
